Ruby By Example - Concepts and Code

There may be no better way to learn how to program than by dissecting real, representative examples written in your language of choice. Ruby by Example analyzes a series of Ruby scripts, examining how the code works, explaining the concepts it illustrates, and showing how to modify it to suit your needs. Baird’s examples demonstrate key features of the language (such as inheritance, encapsulation, higher-order functions, and recursion), while simultaneously solving difficult problems (such as validating XML, creating a bilingual program, and creating command-line interfaces). Each chapter builds upon the previous, and each key concept is highlighted in the margin to make it easier for you to navigate the book.

You’ll learn how to:

Use the interactive Ruby shell (irb) to learn key features of the language
Extend Ruby using RubyGems, the Ruby package manager
Create numerical utilities, as well as utilities that process and analyze HTML/XML
Implement purely functional and metaprogramming techniques to save time and effort
Optimize, profile, and test your code to make sure that it not only does its job, but does it well
Create web applications using Rails

Ruby is the fastest growing programming language today, and for good reason: Its elegant syntax and readable code make for prolific and happy programmers. But it can be difficult to understand and implement without a little help. Ruby by Example shows you how to take advantage of Ruby as you explore Ruby’s fundamental concepts in action.

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream

the-audacity-of-hope-thoughts-on-reclaiming-the-american-dream

Barack Obama's first book, Dreams from My Father, was a compelling and moving memoir focusing on personal issues of race, identity, and community. With his second book The
Audacity of Hope, Obama engages themes raised in his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, shares personal views on faith and values and offers a vision of the future that involves repairing a "political process that is broken" and restoring a government that has fallen out of touch with the people.

Pro ADO .NET 2.0

pro-adodotnet

Pro ADO.NET 2.0 is a guide and reference for.NET developers who are looking to further their understanding of ADO.NET 2.0.

This book takes a new approach, focusing on the practical tasks like connecting to the database, retrieving data, and working with transactions, rather than rehashing much of the MSDN documentation. Pro ADO.NET 2.0 offers the deep and much needed practical understanding, viewpoint, and knowledge developers are looking for.
This book explains what is available in ADO.NET by associating it with the need to solve a practical problem and better architect an application, rather than mugging up the hundreds of classes and properties available in the framework.

Microsoft ADO.NET is part of the Microsoft .NET Framework: a set of tools and layers that allows your application to easily manage and communicate with its file-based or server-based data store. In the .NET Framework, the ADO.NET libraries appear under the System.Data namespace. These libraries include functionality to connect to these data sources, execute commands, and store, manipulate, and retrieve data.

Learning ActionScript

learningactionscript

ActionScript is a scripting language based on ECMAScript. ActionScript is used primarily for the development of websites and software using the Adobe Flash Player platform (in the form of SWF files embedded into Web pages), but is also used in some database applications (such as Alpha Five), and in basic robotics, as with the Make Controller Kit. Originally developed by Macromedia, the language is now owned by Adobe (which acquired Macromedia in 2005). ActionScript was initially designed for controlling simple 2D vector animations made in Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash). Later versions added functionality allowing for the creation of Web-based games and rich Internet applications with streaming media (such as video and audio).

This book provides an overview of ActionScript syntax and information on how to use ActionScript when working with different types of objects. For details on the syntax and usage of every language element, see the ActionScript 2.0 Language Reference.
